Peru
in the Soccer World Cup after a long wait
Peru is classified after an arduous campaign that at
first seemed impossible to fulfill successfully. Group C, to which it belongs,
includes France, Australia and Denmark. The first match of Peru will be against
Denmark at Saransk Stadium on Saturday, June 16, 2018. The Mordovia Stadium (Russian:
Мордовия Арена) initially called Yubileyniy Stadium, is located in
the city of Saransk, Republic of Mordovia. France will be their second opponent
on June 21 in Yekaterinburg and close their duels in Group C against Australia,
on 26 in Sochi.
Peru qualified to five editions of the World Cup
(1930, 1970, 1978, 1982 and 2018), and had the best results when it reached the
quarterfinals reached in 1970 (where it won the fair play prize) 3 and the
second phase in 1978. The Peruvian team ranks 11th in the FIFA world ranking
since November 2017. In 1930, the Peruvian national team was invited to
participate in the first World Cup, played with the national teams of Romania
and Uruguay.
José Paolo Guerrero Gonzales (Chorrillos, Lima, Peru,
1984) plays center forward in the Clube de Regatas do Flamengo of the Brazilian
Championship. He is international with the Peruvian soccer team, of which he is
captain and top scorer with 34 goals. In 2015 he was one of the 59 nominated players
to the Golden Ball, is the first Peruvian in history that appeared on this
list. In the year 2017 was decisive in the classification of Peru, and was
recognized as the second best player in America and was included in the ideal
team of the continent
Ricardo Alberto Gareca Nardi (Tapiales, Buenos Aires,
Argentina, 1958) former footballer and Argentine coach. Gareca is technical
director of the Peruvian National Team since March 2015. The start was not
good, little by little he amended errors to achieve the classification. One of
the best decisions was to leave aside "indisputable" players like
Pizarro, Zambrano, Vargas, and others who formed a kind of "sterile
mafia" in football terms. Since then, he won victories and achieved the
classification after 36 years.
The final list will be:
Goalkeepers:
Pedro Gallese (Veracruz, Mexico), José Carvallo (UTC), Carlos Cáceda
(Municipal).
Defenses:
Luis Advíncula (Lobos, Mexico), Miguel Araujo (Alianza Lima), Aldo Corzo
(University), Nilson Loyola (Melgar), Christian Ramos (Veracruz, Mexico),
Alberto Rodríguez (Junior, Colombia), Anderson Santamaría (Puebla, Mexico),
Miguel Trauco (Flamengo, Brazil).
Flyers:
Pedro Aquino (Lobos, Mexico), Wilmer Cartagena (Veracruz, Mexico), Christian
Cueva (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Edison Flores (Aalborg BK, Denmark), Paolo Hurtado
(Vitória Guimaraes, Portugal), Andy Polo (Portland Timbers) , USA), Renato
Tapia (Feyernoord, Holland), Yoshimar Yotún (Orlando City, USA).

Farfán (Lokomotiv, Russia) and Paolo Guerrero (Flamengo, Brazil).
The
historical figures.
Hector Chumpitaz (San Luis de Cañete, Lima, 1944),
soccer player and Peruvian technical director, always played as a defense in
University of Sports. He was for almost twenty years the captain and great
defensive bastion of the soccer team of Peru that won the 1975 Copa America,
reached the quarterfinals in the World Championships of Mexico 1970 and
Argentina 1978.
It occupies the 36th place in the ranking of the best
South American player of the 20th century published by the International
Federation of Football History and Statistics in 2004. With 65 goals in 456
appearances, it is one of the most scoring defenses in South America and is
part of the top 50 of the top scorers in the history of the First Division
playing as defender.
Teófilo Juan Cubillas Arizaga (Puente Piedra, Lima,
1949), nicknamed the "Nene", is the top idol of the Alianza Lima and
Peru Club, and the maximum referent of Peruvian soccer all over the world. With
the selection he reached the quarterfinals in the World Cups of Mexico 70 and
Argentina 78. In 2014 he was chosen by The Guardian newspaper among the 100
best players in the history of the world.
The Peruvian team has the opportunity and the
challenge in Russia today; the opportunity to achieve glory and stay in a good
position in the final classification. The challenge is to demonstrate that they
equal or surpass the merits of the outstanding players of the past. This task
is not easy, but neither is it impossible.
